This page is set up to spotlight the players that I feel have truly honored the uniform of the New England Patriots. Some of them are in the real Patriots Hall of Fame and some are not. But all of the men listed here made my experiences of watching the Patriots' more enjoyable. The page is set up into four main sections.

Born: 04-Apr-1951 Ht: 6-3 Wt: 265
Drafted: 1973, 1st Round New England Patriots
entered into NFL Hall of Fame: 1991, 1st year eligible.

Played entire career - 13 seasons with the Patriots, a total of 186 games.
He is universally recognized as the best left guard to ever play the game.
Appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in August 1981 where they called him .."the Greatest Offensive Lineman of all time."
Offensive Lineman of the Year for four straight years (1978-81) by NFL players.
Helped the Patriots set the NFL record for team rushing of 3,165 yards in 1978.
Selected to the All-Century team in 2000.
My first favorite Patriot player. Hey, we both played offensive line.

#73 JOHN HANNAH • GALABAMA •  Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991  • Inducted into Patriots HOF in 1991

Played entire career with the Patriots from 1973 through the Super Bowl season of 1985 ... regarded by many as the greatest guard to ever play the game and remains the only Patriot to go into NFL HoF. (until Mike Haynes in 1997) … one of two Patriots voted to the NFL’s 75th anniversary team … played in 183 games, fourth in franchise history … missed only five games with injuries … selected to nine Pro Bowls (1976, 1978-85), a Patriots team record … he was the first rookie offensive lineman in Patriots history to start in his NFL debut … started first 13 games as a rookie. … fourth overall selection in the 1973 draft.

#20 GINO CAPPELLETTI • WR/K
Minnesota • Inducted in 1992

Played for the Patriots from 1960-70 ... Patriots' all-time leading scorer with 1,130 points (42 TDs, 176 FGs and 342 PATs) ... led the AFL in scoring five times and holds two of the top five scoring seasons in NFL history – 155 points in '64 and 147 points in '61 ... Patriots' third all-time leading receiver with 292 catches for 4,589 yards ... holds the Patriots' records for:
extra points attempted (353),

extra points made (342),
FGs attempted (333) and
FGs made (176) ... five-time AFL All-Star.

#85 NICK BUONICONTI • LB • Notre Dame • Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001 • Inducted into Patriots HOF in 1992

Played for the Patriots from 1962-68 ... voted to AFL All-Star game five times as a Patriot (1963-67) ... ranks seventh overall in Patriots history with 24 interceptions ... he was a consensus AFL all-star and the top vote-getter in 1966 ... former ... the Springfield native took night classes during the season at Suffolk University and received his law degree in 1968. Finished his career with the Miami Dolphins.

#89 BOB DEE • DE
Holy Cross • Inducted in 1993


Played for the Patriots from 1960-67 ... iron man of the AFL who never missed a game during career ... started 112 consecutive games ... despite the equipment improvements over the years, Dee was a superstitious player who chose to wear the same helmet throughout his career (105 of 112 games) ... scored the first touchdown in AFL history when he dove onto a fumble in the end zone in a preseason contest vs. Buffalo 7/30/60 ... voted to five AFL All-Star teams (1961, 1963-65).

Prairie View • Inducted in 1993


Played for the Patriots from 1960-71 ... nicknamed "earthquake" ... played in 141 games ... voted to four AFL All-Star games (1961, 1966-67 and 1969) ... voted "best pass rushing tackle in the AFL," by AFL scouts in 1967 ... at 5-feet-11-inches and 255 pounds, Hunt possessed great size and speed in his era ... once intercepted a pass and out-ran running backs Billy Cannon and Charley Taylor on a 79-yard touchdown return.

Kentucky • Inducted in 1993


Played for the Patriots from 1961-67 ... Third leading passer in Patriots history with 16,747 yards, 2,413 attempts and 1,140 completions ... threw for over 20,000 yards during his NFL career ... established nearly every Patriots passing record during the '60s and still holds the single-season touchdown record (31) ... voted to three AFL All-Star teams (1963-64 and 1966) ... earned AFL's Comeback Player of the Year honor in 1966 when he threw for 3,441 yards and 31 touchdowns.
#57 STEVE NELSON • LB
North Dakota St. • Inducted in 1993

Played for the Patriots from 1974-87 ... nucleus of Patriots defense for 14 years ... voted to three Pro Bowls (1981, 1985-86) ... 174 games played ranks sixth overall ... recorded over 100 tackles nine times during his career and finished with 1,776 tackles, an average of 10.2 per game ... led the team in tackles in eight of 14 seasons ... recorded 207 tackles during his 1984 Pro Bowl season ... was credited with a career-high 22 stops vs. NY Jets (9/19/82).

#40 MICHAEL HAYNES • CB Arizona St. • Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997 • Inducted into Patriots HOF in 1994

Played for the Patriots from 1976-82 ... known for tenacious man-to-man coverage ... second all-time leading punt returner in Patriots history with 111 for 1,159 yards (10.4 avg.) ... fifth on interception list with 28 ... named to six Pro Bowls (1976-80 and 1982) in seven seasons ... was the first player in Patriots history to return a punt for a touchdown – 89 yards vs. Buffalo (11/7/76) ... established seven new punt return records his rookie season. Finished his career with the Oakland Raiders.

Kansas • Inducted in 1995


Played entire career for the Patriots from 1975-90 ... Second leading passer in Pats history with 26886 yards, 3,593 attempts and 1,879 completions ... All-time leader in TD passes with 182 ..5 in a 1979 game against the Jets...but also leads all QB in Pats uniform with 208 interceptions...Became well known for his reckless abandon and penchant for running the football....Sporting News Quoted Dallas Head Coach, Tom Landry as saying..."Steve Grogan is the best running QB in the league." He is No.12 all-time rusher for the Patriots with 2,176 yards and scored 35 rushing TDs.

Played for the Patriots from 1982 to 1993.... Named UPI Defensive player of the year for 1985 ....was selected to 5 consecutive Pro-Bowls  Holds the team record for all time sacks (100) and most sacks in a season (18.5).

I have put together a lineup of my favorite players at each position. Most of these players are long gone and might not be the most noteworthy at any given spot. However, these are the people I most enjoyed watching play. While I recognize the quality of the players on the present Patriots team, most have not been around long enough to get onto my team. In time some of them will supplant some of those listed below.
